Excursions

Let's be frank, one of the single best things to do while in Marina Di Carrara is to leave Marina Di Carrara. And I don't mean that in a disparaging way, I just mean that when you're *this* close to Florence and Pisa, it'd be silly not to go on at least one or two detours.

Chapter 1: The Enchanting Charms of Florence

Now, let's talk about Florence, the dazzling diamond of Tuscany that's just too irresistible for us wanderlust souls. It's a stone's throw away from our primary focus for this piece, Marina di Carrara, but let's be real - when has a detour ever stopped us from exploring something magical?

Florence

Picture this - Virgin Voyages serve up this drool-worthy day trip to Florence. It's like a time machine, spiriting you away into the city's rich past, culture, and tantalizing tastes. Sure, yours truly didn't actually hop on this trip this time round (don't judge, I can't do everything!), but boy, the thought of stepping foot in the cradle of the Renaissance sends tingles of excitement right down to my explorer boots!

And just when you think it couldn't get any better, they throw in a visit to this historic castle. We're talking grand ballrooms, ancient corridors, and stepping exactly where Tuscan nobles once pranced around - talk about a heart-pounding, thrilling ride!

But hold on, there's more! This castle isn't just about the grandeur and history, it's also about getting your taste buds on a trip! They've got this absolutely charming wine tasting happening right there. It's like the cherry on top, giving the excursion a classy twist.

Now, let's just sit back and let our imaginations do the walking. Imagine basking in the warm Tuscan sun, inside this historic castle, a glass of exquisite Italian wine in hand. You're surrounded by the intoxicating aroma of vineyards and olive groves, and every sip is a flavor explosion. Paired with traditional Italian food, it's like taking a bite out of the region itself. It would have been an out-of-this-world sensory journey. Each wine is a story in a bottle, curated to bring out the unique essence of this stunning region. Now that, my friends, is how you truly soak in a place.

Ah, well. Maybe next time for me. But you - don't you dare miss it!

Chapter 2: The Temptation of Pisa

Every traveler's tale has a bit of a plot twist, doesn't it? Well, ours was the age-old question of whether to make a pit stop at the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The leaning tower of Pisa.

You see, when you're trying to map out your perfect adventure, sometimes you need to make some tough calls. And so there we were, all of us huddled around, debating the pros and cons of a detour to that iconic, ever-tilting tower. That's when Joe, my friend who just so happens to be an amazing performer on the Valiant Lady, chimed in with his two cents. And let's face it, when it comes to travel tips, who better to trust than someone on the inside, right?

Joe had seen the Leaning Tower in all its glory, and while he marveled at its unique architecture and its stamp on history, he also gave us a bit of a reality check. Sure, you could snap some cool photos, pretending to hold up the leaning tower or striking a goofy pose, but apart from that, it might not offer much more unless you're a hardcore history buff. Plus, he warned us about the possible expenses and the potential for it to become a bit of a yawn-fest.

And did I mention the heat? It was like the sun was having a super-sale on solar flares! Coupled with the ticking clock, we knew we had to prioritize. So, after a hearty chat, we decided to give Pisa a miss this time and stick to exploring the beauty of Marina di Carrara. The marble mountains were calling us, and we couldn't resist the allure of the local experiences waiting to be discovered (or the arcade on the ship!).

But hey, let's not dismiss Pisa altogether. For those of you who live and breathe history, the Leaning Tower could be your thing! It's a piece of the past that has weathered centuries, and that in itself is fascinating.

Conclusion

Marina di Carrara, with its hidden gems and off-the-beaten-track experiences, reveals a side of the Tuscan Coast that goes beyond its famous marble mountains. From exploring the enchanting streets of Colonnata and Pietrasanta to savoring authentic flavors in local eateries and immersing in the region's rich artistic heritage, Marina di Carrara offers a captivating journey for travelers seeking an authentic Tuscan experience.
